Understanding the UK’s New Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) Process

January 13, 2025

As of January 8, 2025, the United Kingdom has introduced a new entry requirement for travelers from visa-exempt countries, including the United States and Canada. This new measure, known as the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), is designed to enhance border security and streamline the entry process for visitors.

What Is the ETA?

The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is a digital permission that allows travelers to visit the UK for short stays without obtaining a traditional visa. It is similar to systems already in place in countries like the United States (ESTA) and Canada (eTA). The ETA is mandatory for all travelers from visa-exempt nations, regardless of age, including infants and children.

Key Details of the ETA:

  • Application Process: Travelers can apply for an ETA through the official UK government website or via the UK ETA app, available on both Apple and Google platforms. The application requires a valid passport, a recent photograph, and answers to a series of personal and security-related questions. The process is straightforward and typically takes about 20 minutes to complete.
  • Processing Time: Most applications are processed within three working days. However, it’s advisable to apply well in advance of your travel date to account for any unforeseen delays.
  • Validity and Cost: An approved ETA is valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It permits multiple visits to the UK, with each stay lasting up to six months for purposes such as tourism, business, short-term study, or transit. The application fee is £10 (approximately $12.75).
  • Exemptions: Individuals holding a UK visa, UK residency, or an Irish passport are exempt from the ETA requirement. Additionally, residents of Ireland traveling to the UK from within the Common Travel Area do not need an ETA.

Important Considerations:

  • Mandatory for All Travelers: Every traveler from a visa-exempt country, regardless of age, must obtain an individual ETA before traveling to the UK. This includes those transiting through UK airports or traveling to British Overseas Territories such as Anguilla, Bermuda, and the Cayman Islands.
  • No Guarantee of Entry: While an ETA allows you to travel to the UK, it does not guarantee entry. Upon arrival, UK border officials will verify your eligibility for entry.
  • Stay Informed: Travelers should stay updated on any changes to entry requirements or travel advisories by consulting official UK government sources or trusted news outlets.
