Cruising Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands

October 13, 2026 thru October 20, 2026

This fascinating journey into the untouched natural wonder of the Galápagos Islands begins in Ecuador’s capital city of Quito. Feel what it’s like to be standing in the middle of the world at the Equator Monument before boarding the MV Galápagos Legend for a four-night cruise to these remarkable islands. Exotic locales and animals await your discovery with shore excursions on Santiago, Isabela, Fernandina and Santa Cruz Islands. Following your exploration of the islands, enjoy a guided city tour and overnight accommodations.

“We recently traveled to the Galapagos Islands with Sun Tours. The yacht we traveled on in the Galapagos and small group experience was beyond our imaginations. We had personal experiences of snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, and birding. In the jungle we had day and night walks and canoeing along rivers and creeks to see a myriad of jungle life such as otters, monkeys, birds, and insects. We always felt safe. Our guides were experts in their areas and formed personal relationships. Our escort was as enthusiastic as we were and always helpful to meet our various needs. It was truly an emotional experience.” Lynn S. on Galapagos 2023

DAY 2 - Quito, Ecuador

After breakfast, enjoy a guided tour of Quito. The first city to be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, Quito boasts a historic center and centuries-old landmarks, dating back 500 years. See Independence Square, flanked by Presidential and Archbishop’s palaces. Visit ‘Mitad del Mundo’ and the Equator Monument, which stands at 0 degrees, and feel what it’s like to be standing in the middle of the world. During the included city tour, see a bull fighting ring and the gilded Spanish colonial church. This evening, enjoy the city on your own.

Meals included: (B, L)

DAY 3 - Quito to Baltra & MV Galápagos Legend Embarkation

After breakfast, board your flight to Baltra. Upon arrival, embark the MV Galápagos Legend for a four-night cruise. Set sail for Mosquera Islet, a tiny, low lying islet covered in coral sand. Experience your first wet landing and see lazy sea lions sunning themselves on the sand as you reach the shore. Shorebirds as well as herons, lava gulls and boobies are also found here. While snorkeling, one can often see sharks, rays and barracuda.

Meals included: (B, L, D)

DAY 4 - Egas Port (Santiago Island) & Rabida Island

This morning, visit the fourth largest island in the Galápagos, Santiago Island. It provides spectacular views of powerful volcanic activity. A wet landing brings you to Egas Port, a black
volcanic sand beach, visited by Darwin in 1835. The unique, truly striking layered terrain of the Santiago shore is home to a variety of animals including the bizarre yellow-crowned night
heron, sea lions and lava lizards. Marine wildlife including lobster, starfish and marine iguanas graze on algae beds alongside Sally light-foot crabs. You may also see colonies of endemic fur seals swimming in cool-water volcanic rock pools. The afternoon’s adventure is on Rabida Island. Lying at the heart of the archipelago, this dramatic island, with its distinctive red-sand beach, is home to sea lions, mockingbirds, finches, endemic Galápagos doves and vermillion flycatchers. A walk takes you through a forest of palo santo and cacti to a beautiful overview of the bay. During a dinghy ride along the marine cliffs, observe nesting seabirds. Snorkeling here can be excellent, often with large schools of black-striped salemas, sea lions and the ubiquitous turtles.

Meals included: (B, L, D)

DAY 5 - Urbina Bay & Tangus Cove (Isabela Island)

Start your day with a wet landing on the volcanic black beach at Urbina Bay. In 1954, a volcano uplifted the coral reef, leaving marine skeletons that tell of its ancient past. Look for Darwin’s finches, land iguanas and the Galápagos cotton flower in bloom. After a short walk inland, outstanding snorkeling awaits in the crystal clear waters, showcasing fascinating marine life. Amazing views of the Alcedo Volcano, which spewed an unusual combination of rhyolite and basalt lava, stands as a powerful backdrop and reminder of nature’s power. This afternoon, a dry landing takes you into Tangus Cove. A well-known hideout in the days of pirates, it was also one of the few sites visited by Darwin and the HMS Beagle in 1835. A trail walk leads to Darwin’s salt-water crater lake with excellent views of lava fields and volcanic formations. The dinghy ride along the shoreline showcases blue-footed boobies, brown noddys, terns, and other seabirds. You can also snorkel in the deep water, along the submerged wall with turtles and native fish.

Meals included: (B, L, D)

DAY 6 - Punta Espinosa (Fernandina Island) & Punta Vicente Roca (Isabela Island)

Arrive via dry landing at Espinosa Point on Fernandina Island, one of the most well-preserved of the Galápagos Islands. Discover one of the world’s most pristine island ecosystems as you observe hundreds of prehistoric marine iguanas sunbathing on black lava rocks. Quiet now as you encounter flightless cormorants on their nesting site, the only place in the world to find this species. These birds once flew, but over time, adapted to their environment and lost their ability to fly. Be on the lookout for the major predator on the island, the Galápagos hawk. This afternoon, visit Vicente Roca Point. This is a marine-only visitor site with great opportunities for deep-water snorkeling. See plenty of red-lipped batfish, seahorses, frogfish, marine turtles, sunfish, nudibranchs and octopi in these waters. On a dinghy ride along the coast, observe brown pelicans, penguins, flightless cormorants, nazca and blue-footed boobies, all ready to pose for pictures!

Meals included: (B, L, D)

DAY 7 - Santa Cruz Island & Flight to Guayaquil

As your cruise comes to an end, you’ll be filled with wonder at the sights and sounds of the Galápagos Islands. Disembark the vessel after a dry landing and journey by coach from the coast to the dense humid forest of the mountains and the Highlands Tortoise Reserve. A variety of birds – tree and ground finches, vermillion flycatchers, paint-billed crakes, yellow warblers and cattle egrets (usually standing on the tortoises’ shell!) make this their home, while the Galápagos giant tortoises are also seen meandering through pastures in their natural habitat. Continue to the Baltra airport for your flight to Guayaquil. Upon arrival, enjoy a city tour with a local guide as you visit Centenario Park dedicated to the independence and freedom of the old city. A walk through the legendary colonial district Barrio Las Peñas provides panoramic views of the city and Guayas River. While strolling along the charming river promenade, admire the Rotonda Monument dedicated to leaders of South American Independence, along with other historical landmarks and the Moorish clock tower. The tour concludes at the hotel for an evening at leisure.

Meals included: (B)

ITINERARY

For your reference, we send to you a detailed itinerary approximately 3-4 weeks prior to the scheduled tour departure. This has day-by-day times and events, hotel information where you can be reached in case of an emergency, and airline information.

The times listed on the itinerary are all approximate. We cannot be held responsible for schedule changes due to unforeseen circumstances with the weather, transportation agents, highway conditions, hotels or contracting agents.

AIRLINE TICKETS

You will be issued your boarding pass the morning of our departure, after your arrival at the Albuquerque International Sunport. If you have an American Airlines frequent flyer number, or a TSA number, please call our office at least 3 days prior to the tour to ensure we can note these in your reservation.

If you are joining the tour from locations other than Albuquerque, we can make other arrangements for you to join the tour. Please call our office for more details.

AIRPORT SECURITY

Do not forget to bring your government issued picture ID to show at the airport. A Driver’s License or Passport is preferred. If you do not have the proper ID, the airline will turn you away.

BAGGAGE

We have arranged for handling for one piece of luggage per person regarding the skycaps (where available) and hotels. If you check through luggage note that the maximum weight for the checked piece of luggage is 50 pounds and maximum size is 62 inches (length + width + height). If your bag weighs over 50 pounds the airlines will levy an extra fee that you will be responsible to pay. If you feel the need to lock your checked through luggage and your bag is searched, your lock could be damaged in the process. You can purchase a TSA (Transportation Security Administration) accepted and recognized lock at any luggage store. Make sure you ask for a TSA approved lock. These locks are the kind that TSA screeners can open by using a special tool without breaking. Passengers can carry-on 1 bag (dimensions are limited to 10x16x24 inches), plus a personal type bag, like a purse. We advise that you pack your carry-on lightly. There are restrictions regarding your carryon baggage and contents due to enhanced security measures. If you have further concerns, please visit the TSA's Web-site at www.tsa.gov. There is room inside the motorcoach for your hand carried bag.

CHECKED BAGGAGE FEES

On our airline for this tour, passengers are assessed a fee per checked in bag, by the Airlines, upon checking in for the flight.

EMERGENCY CONTACT

It is always a good idea to carry on your person a list of medications that you are taking and an emergency contact phone number while you are traveling. And we suggest making a copy of the itinerary and provide it to a friend or family member.

GRATUITIES/ITEMS INCLUDED IN PRICE

The traditional end-of-tour gratuity is included on this tour. All hotel porterage and airport skycap (when available) fees are included. We also include the gratuities for the coach drivers. Hotel housekeeping tips are not included. Tips for guides/services on optional excursions or individual on-ship services are not included.

LODGING REQUESTS

If you would like to request special accommodations at the hotel(s) where we are lodging, please call us as soon as possible and we will forward these requests for you. The phone numbers of the hotel(s) where we are staying are listed on the itinerary.

Many hotels around the country have instituted a "reconditioning fee" of $300 or more that is levied upon a guest that smokes in a non-smoking room. If this occurs during our tour you will be responsible for paying this fee to the hotel prior to check-out.

TRAVEL REQUESTS

We pay close attention to your requests but please realize that these are merely requests and cannot be guaranteed.

WEATHER AND CLOTHING/MISC. SUGGESTIONS

Galapagos Islands:

Temperature: October in the Galapagos Islands typically experiences comfortable, mild weather with average daytime temperatures ranging from 65°F to 78°F (18°C to 26°C). The surrounding waters are cool, averaging between 66°F to 73°F (19°C to 23°C), making it refreshing for swimming and diving. October falls within the cool and dry season, with minimal rainfall.

Ecuador:

In October, Ecuador experiences varying temperatures depending on the region. The coast sees warm, beach-friendly weather with highs around 70-90°F (21-32°C). The Andes highlands have mild days, ranging from 50-70°F (10-21°C), with increased rainfall.

Altitude Consideration: Quito is located at a high altitude (about 2,850 meters or 9,350 feet above sea level). The thin air at this altitude can cause some visitors to experience altitude sickness. It's important to acclimatize properly and stay hydrated.

Clothing Recommendations: Given the range in temperatures, it's advisable to dress in layers. Warm clothing for the evenings and early mornings is recommended, along with lighter attire for the daytime. Sun protection, such as hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen, is also important due to the high UV index at altitude and on the cruise.
