Day 1

Your private chauffeur will transfer you to Le Phénicien, moored close to Avignon’s city wall and right beside the famous Pont d’Avignon of nursery-rhyme fame. After a champagne reception and settling-in, enjoy a stroll into Avignon before your first gourmet dinner on board.

Day 2

After a leisurely breakfast with freshly baked breads from the boulangerie, there’s a guided walking tour of Avignon; we’ll explore the palace of the Popes, the ancient streets and take in the everyday life of the vibrant town center. We cast off and take our first cruise during lunch on board, heading for Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where this afternoon’s guided visit offers a prestigious and delicious wine tasting.

Day 3

Still standing after 2,000 years, this monumental aqueduct is testament to the brilliance of Roman engineering. The Pont du Gard solved the problems of water supply in the region, so resonant in our world today, and we’ll find out more about its construction and history in the excellent museum close by. This afternoon we’ll relax on board as we sail south to Vallabrègues, a quiet and charming mooring for the night, where we can play pétanque under the plane trees before sundowners.

Day 4

This morning’s drive through the Alpilles mountains takes us to the stunning village of Les Baux de Provence, set atop a rocky outcrop, crowned with a ruined castle. Having explored the winding streets and its artisanal shops we’ll enjoy the stunning views of the countryside overlooking the plains to the south. The afternoon’s cruise includes a passage through the 36 feet deep lock of Beaucaire, one of the many that has tamed the mighty flow of the Alpen snow-melt, enabling a major trade route for wine to develop.

Day 5

A real treat this morning as we take a guided tour of the stunning city of Arles. Its breathtaking Roman amphitheater and other antiquities will delight and fascinate, and we’ll see why Vincent Van Gogh, who painted 300 canvases during his year here in 1888, was so inspired by the light of this region. Leaving the Rhône River, we cruise a short stretch of the petit Rhône and join the Canal Rhône a Sète to reach the quiet, typically Provençal village of Gallician.

Day 6

Our excursion this morning is into the wild Camargue to visit a manade, a typical ranch, where the gardians à cheval look after their cattle. They’ll demonstrate the herding of bulls on their superb white horses. The cruise to Aigues-Mortes, a 14th century walled city, will be our last stop. King St. Louis set sail from this town on his Holy Crusades and we’ll enjoy today’s bustle of daily life before the Captain’s farewell dinner on board.

Day 7

After breakfast, depart for your transfer to Nimes and your journey home.

WEATHER AND CLOTHING/MISC. SUGGESTIONS

In May, France generally experiences pleasant spring weather. However, weather conditions can vary depending on the region.

In southern France, especially along the Mediterranean coast, May tends to be warm and sunny, with temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to mid-70s Fahrenheit (around 18-24 degrees Celsius). This region often enjoys plenty of sunshine and relatively low precipitation during this time.

In central and northern France, including cities like Paris, the weather can be milder, with temperatures typically ranging from the mid-50s to low 60s Fahrenheit (around 12-17 degrees Celsius). There may be occasional rain showers, but overall, it's a comfortable time to explore the cities and countryside.

Keep in mind that these are general trends, and actual weather conditions can vary from year to year and from one region to another. It's always a good idea to check a reliable weather forecast closer to your travel date for the most accurate information.
